A Brief History of Mojo Hand FX
Currently based in Holland, Michigan, Mojo Hand FX actually started as a pedal custom shop of Tone Factor, from Evans, Louisiana. Fun fact: the company's name alludes to the lyric "I'm going to Louisiana to get me a Mojo Hand", from Lightning Hopkins' song "Goin' to Louisiana".
In 2008, Brad Fee turned Mojo Hand FX into an independent company and moved operations to Texas. In 2015, the company was sold to Cusack Music, continuing the brand's legacy of boutique pedal excellence at an affordable price.
Another interesting fact is that, according to the company's website, after this ownership transition, Mojo Hand FX's palm logo was flipped to a right-hand palm, referencing the shape of its new home state, Michigan.
Our Best Mojo Hand FX Pedals in 2024
Mojo Hand FX Sericon
Main Features
- Overdrive based on the legendary Klon Centaur
- Three stages of gain manipulation
- Built-in low pass filter
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX Sericon is an overdrive pedal based on the legendary Klon Centaur, which is a staple among blues and rock guitarists, thanks to its transparent saturation that is capable of delivering creamy tones without overshadowing your amp's natural sound. As the original pedal is very rare to find, the Sericon is an excellent boutique alternative.
The Sericon isn't a mere Centaur clone though. It features three stages of gain manipulation which allows for precise tuning. While the Drive and Gain knobs affect the harmonic complexity of the effect, the Blaze parameter is a low pass filter which can help tighten the low end of the overdrive.
Overall, the Sericon sounds thick and creamy and is an excellent addition to any pedalboard. It is a particularly great choice if you're looking to emulate the tone of guitarists such as John Mayer. The pedal sounds good when paired with another overdrive such as a Tube Screamer as well.
Mojo Hand FX Swim Team
Main Features
- Quad chorus and vintage-inspired flanger
- Two DSP programs (push-button selectable)
- True bypass
With a visual inspired by Nirvana's Nevermind album, the Swim Team is a minimalistic yet versatile combo pedal featuring a quad chorus and a vintage-inspired flanger, with two DSP programs that are push-button selectable.
While the pedal might look basic at first glance, the beauty of it lies in the fact that it's very easy to dial in amazing tones with this unit. No matter where you put each knob, a thick yet "swimmy" modulated sound is guaranteed.
Mojo Hand FX Stylus
Main Features
- Lo-fi modulator
- The Stylus adds vinyl and tape warmth, warble, and pitch anomalies to your tone
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX Stylus is a quite unique pedal, as it is at its core a lo-fi modulator meant to emulate the warmth, warble, and pitch anomalies you get from running your audio signal through vinyl and tape. It isn't so common to see a unit dedicated to replicating these effects.
Three separate knobs let you dial each effect: saturate, which as the name implies can give your tone a thick yet tight analog character, warble, a pitch modulation tool, and degrade, which simulates random volume dropouts and scratchiness.
Finally, the middle push button allows you to select between hi-fi and lo-fi bandwidth, which affects the overall sound and behavior of the pedal. The Stylus is an excellent unit for anyone looking to add an organic touch to their tone, but particularly great if you're into styles such as lo-fi and bedroom pop.
Mojo Hand FX Extra Special
Main Features
- Vintage inspired overdrive
- Based on the Mojo Hand FX DMBL
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX Extra Special is an evolution of the company's highly acclaimed DMBL overdrive pedal, which is considered by many one of the best units of its type, thanks to its rich harmonic content and creamy tones, reminiscent of the Dumble amps it was inspired on.
With a very responsive circuit and many parameters to fine-tune your sound, the Extra Special shines when it comes to medium to higher gain tones. It emulates a natural and analog valve-style overdrive that is so versatile.
While you get the usual gain, volume, and tone knobs, the hidden gems in this pedal are the accent parameter and the 2-way jazz/rock toggle, both allowing you to dial a great-sounding overdrive very easily. Listen to the demo video below to understand what we're talking about!
Mojo Hand FX Octaverse
Main Features
- Reverse octave delay
- Selectable high and low octave
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX Octaverse is a reverse octave delay with selectable high and low octave, allowing you to easily achieve otherworldly and experimental sounds. We decided to include this pedal on our list not only because it's very unique in what it does, but also because you usually only get this type of effect with larger, more expensive delay units.
The Octaverse is quite simple to understand and to dial in great tones, though. At lower settings, it can give your tone a slightly psychedelic ambience. Cranking everything up to ten will make the delay self-oscillate and give you several minutes of reflections, useful for creating drones and pads.
While this pedal isn't so versatile, it is an excellent choice if you want this specific reverse delay effect without having to spend a fortune on larger delay pedals.
Mojo Hand FX Speakeasy
Main Features
- Preamp/boost based on the EP-3 circuit
- 3-way thickness toggle
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX Speakeasy is a simple yet powerful preamp/boost that can help push your tone in the right direction. While it's not meant to drastically alter your sound, it can give it some extra coloring without overshadowing your amplifier's natural characteristics. The Speakeasy works particularly well when paired with overdrives such as the Sericon.
With the Speakeasy, the star of the show is the 3-way toggle which lets you choose between a neutral tone, a punchy one, and add more low end to your signal. Useful when you want to make a tube screamer-style overdrive sound thicker, for example. The pedal also works wonderfully with bass, thanks to its tight and solid low-frequency response.
Mojo Hand FX Little Wonder
Main Features
- Vintage-inspired envelope filter
- Bandpass/low-pass switch
- True bypass
The Little Wonder is a vintage-inspired envelope filter that can be used with guitars, basses, and keyboards. It is, in our opinion, one of the most responsive and clean-sounding pedals of its type. While envelope filters are usually tricky to dial in, this pedal is the opposite: it gives you some usable tones very fast.
One feature that is particularly interesting in the Little Wonder is the blend knob. While it sounds good cranked all the way up if you're using the pedal with a guitar, it is an extremely useful parameter when you pair the unit with a bass, as it allows to achieve that funky envelope tone while letting the foundational notes shine through.
Another nice addition is the BP/LP switch, which lets you select between bandpass and lowpass filter for more versatility. Overall, the Little Wonder is one of the best envelope filter pedals currently on the market.
Mojo Hand FX Clarity
Main Features
- Clean-sounding compressor
- Two distinct compressor types (slope and envelope)
- Built-in silent noise gate
- True bypass
A solid compressor pedal is a must-have if you want to achieve studio-like tones in a heartbeat. The Clarity pedal does just that, giving you more dynamic control without coloring your tone, featuring an added built-in silent noise gate and two distinct compressor types: slope (smoother, more subtle) and envelope (punchier, more noticeable).
While subtle, the Clarity can be dialed in very easily, featuring a master comp knob that shapes the overall behavior of the unit. The mix knob is very useful as well, as it lets you blend between the original and compressed signal.
Mojo Hand FX One Ton Bee
Main Features
- 60's inspired vintage fuzz
- Inspired by the fuzz-rite germanium fuzz
- True bypass
The Mojo Hand FX One Ton Bee is a germanium fuzz inspired by the fuzz-rite, the holy grail when it comes to 60's garage rock tones from the likes of The Ventures and The Yardbirds. At its core, it features a simple yet high-quality germanium transistor that sounds good both with power chords and melodic lines.
The One Ton Bee is quite responsive to the dynamics of your playing, and you can further adjust the effect with the volume knob of your guitar, which allows you to roll back the effect and use it as a subtle crunch, for example.
Mojo Hand FX Rook Royale
Main Features
- Overdrive and boost combo
- 3-way clipping toggle
- True bypass
The last entry on our list is the Rook Royale, which is a combination of the aforementioned Speakeasy boost and the renowned Rook overdrive, also by Mojo Hand FX. It has been favored by players such as Brad Whitford (Aerosmith) and Ty Tabor (King's X), thanks to its versatility and tone possibilities.
On the Speakeasy section (left), you can select whether the boost or the overdrive comes first. On the Rook section (right), you get three clipping choices to choose from: LED, neutral, and silicon.
Another very nice feature of this pedal is the bandaxall EQ, combining a treble control for the boost and a bass control for the overdrive, which is a well-thought-out addition to blending the two effects as you like.
Conclusion
These are the 10 Mojo Hand FX pedals you should try in 2024! Some of our personal favorites include the Sericon, the One Ton Bee, and the Rook Royale, as they exceeded our expectations in terms of usability and sound quality.
